5 Tips to Ease the Transition Back to School

Believe it or not, school starts in a few short weeks. Here are a few tips to help control the transition back to school.

Establish a solid sleep schedule beginning two weeks prior

Did you know that school aged kids need between 9-11 hours of sleep each night? It can be a nightmare as a parent to drag a tired kid out of bed, not to mention that lack of sleep can lead to impaired academic performance and behavioral issues. To make life easier, start the transition at least two weeks prior to the start of school. Start slowly by waking your kids and sending them to bed 10-15’ earlier each day. By establishing a sleep schedule ahead of time, your kids will be better rested and ready to take on the day.

Declutter your kids’ clothing

Kids grow so fast! It seems like one day they wake up and nothing fits. Take the time to sort through your kids dressers and closets. See what fits and what doesn’t. Ask your child what they don’t like to wear anymore and donate the items. This will save you time and energy as now you don’t have to sift through clothes that don’t fit or that your child refuses to wear.

Designate a drop zone

During the school year, your floor can quickly become a disaster from the kids leaving coats and book bags strewn throughout your home. By designating a drop zone, you can gain a little control of where everything is. Be sure to make hooks accessible for your kids; Command strip hooks are perfect for this purpose. Designate an area for the influx of papers and sort through the papers on a regular basis so you don’t miss an important deadline or have to search for a misplaced permission form.

Plan ahead and have clear expectations

The night before, pack your kids lunches and have them choose their outfits for the following day. Give them choices, make it fun, and involve them in the process. By offering your kids choices, they feel as though they have some sense of control in the process and are usually more willing to help. Talk to your kids about your expectations during their morning routine and make a checklist of things that need done to get out of the door on time.

Give yourself extra time

A calm parent is a happy parent. No one likes to start the day in a hurried frenzy. Try setting your alarm a little earlier. Take a few minutes at the beginning of each day and enjoy the peace before the hectic morning begins. When you are well rested and not rushed, you are in a better mindset to tackle the day.
